Who is eligible to join?
Any person 18 or older who lives in Bethel or the surrounding area is eligible to join. The department also has a cadet program for 16 and 17 year olds. Any person wishing to join the department should submit an application.
What will be required of me if I join?
Once an application is received a background check is preformed and the prospective member will be asked to meet with the board of directors. Once voted in new members will serve a one year probationary period. Those interested in the fire service would take a Firefighter I course. Those interested in EMS would take an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course. Drills are held on the second, third and fourth Mondays of the month at 7pm. Monthly meetings that are held the first Thursday of each month at 7pm.
How do I join?
Those interested in joining may download an application or obtain an application in person at the firehouse during any regularly scheduled drill or meeting. If you would like to get an application at another time call the firehouse at (203)778-7414.
Administrative members do not respond to fire or EMS calls and are not required to take part in drills. Instead, they help with community activities and the business aspects of the department. The application procedure for associate members is the same as the one for regular members.
People aged 16 and 17 may join the department as cadet members with their parents' consent. Cadet members attend drills and other training. They are prohibited from responding to certain calls and only preform approved functions that are within their abilities. They may assist firefighters and EMTs with less critical tasks. When junior members turn 18, they may become regular members. The application procedure for junior members is the same as the one for regular members.
